SUNYANI, Bono Region — The Sunyani Manhene, Odeeefo Ogyamansan Boahen Korkor II has undertaken the initiative of providing essential boarding supplies to a number of Senior High School students coming from poor families as a way of promoting education and of helping to develop the next generation of leaders. To help reduce the financial strain on their families during their preparation for attending boarding school, the beneficiaries were given mattresses, trunks, chop boxes, and pillows. Nana Kwame Addae Kuntuma III, the Nifahene of the Sunyani Traditional Council, put forward the items on behalf of the Sunyani Manhene. The traditional leadership states that the initiative is aimed at students and their families who need extra support in order to cover the costs of entering Senior High School. Nana Kwame Addae Kuntuma III, in his presentation, stated that the intervention is just the opening move of the Sunyani Manhene’s wider initiatives to promote education and support young people in Sunyani and in the areas surrounding it.
Education at the Heart of Sunyani Manhene’s Vision
The education of the people remains one of the main priorities of Odɛɛfoɔ Ɔgyeamansan Boahen Korkor II. His aim is to assist in the creation of a new generation of young people who have the education, skills, and knowledge needed to compete on a global scale and at the same time make a meaningful contribution to the future development of Sunyani and the wider Bono Region. This initiative is part of a more general approach which regards investment in young people as not just aid to individual students but as an investment in the long-term social and economic development of the traditional area. For students coming from households with financial difficulties, the expense of boarding supplies can add greatly to the costs that families have to meet when their children start Senior High School; offering these necessary items can enable the students to begin their education with greater confidence and allow the families to use their limited resources for other educational needs.
Beneficiaries Express Appreciation
One of the beneficiaries, Princess Frema Kereme Senior thanked Odɛɛfoɔ Ɔgyeamansan Boahen Korkor II for his help and referred to the support as an important contribution to their education. They expressed their gratitude to the Sunyani Manhene for his generosity and for his care of students and families who need help. The traditional leadership encouraged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity by taking their studies seriously and working to become responsible citizens capable of contributing to the development of their communities. The Sunyani Manhene, since he has regarded education as a key element of his development programme, expects that initiatives such as this will provide opportunities for young people and will help to build up the human capital required to promote both the future growth of Sunyani and that of the wider Bono Region.
