Ghana Beacon: AI-Generated Content & Ethics Policy
Ghana Beacon delivers accurate, timely, and trustworthy news for Ghana and its diaspora. We recognize the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence in journalism. This policy safeguards our journalistic integrity.
- The “Human-in-the-Loop” Mandate
Every article must be reviewed and approved by a human editor. We never permit fully automated news publishing. AI may assist, but a human verifies accuracy and tone for each story.
- Permitted Uses of AI
We allow our editorial team to use AI tools for the following supportive tasks:
- Headline Brainstorming: Generating multiple options for headlines to improve reader engagement.
- Summarization: Creating bulleted summaries or “TL;DR” sections for long-form investigative reports.
- Grammar & Style: Using tools like Grammarly or specialized editors to ensure linguistic precision.
- We use AI to analyze datasets, such as election results, which reporters then verify.
- Prohibited Uses of AI
To retain reader and search engine trust, the following are strictly prohibited:
- Source Fabrication: AI must never be used to “hallucinate” quotes, events, or statistics. All facts must be cross-referenced with primary sources.
- Opinion Pieces: Editorial columns and opinion pieces must reflect the genuine thoughts and lived experiences of the attributed author, not an algorithm.
- AI tools can’t rewrite news from other outlets without original reporting or significant value added.
- Disclosure and Transparency
When AI helps create structure or sections of a report, Ghana Beacon will clearly disclose it (e.g., ‘AI-assisted and editor-verified content.’).
- Commitment to E-E-A-T
We value Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. AI cannot replace reporters’ local experience in Ghana and beyond. We focus on primary reporting and direct engagement with our communities.
- Fact-Checking and Corrections
AI-generated suggestions are subject to the same rigorous fact-checking standards as human-written copy. If an error occurs due to AI-assisted tools, we will issue a correction immediately and transparently acknowledge the mistake in accordance with our general Corrections Policy.
