TAMALE, Ghana — The Chairman of Vice-Chancellors Ghana (VCG), Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako, has pledged the fraternity’s support to Professor Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu, following his investiture as the sixth Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS). Professor Asare-Bediako, who is also Vice-Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), delivered the address on behalf of VCG during the ceremony on Thursday, September 3, 2026.

Professor Asare-Bediako stated that Professor Iddrisu’s appointment marks a significant development for UDS and the higher education sector in Ghana. He encouraged the new Vice-Chancellor to reinforce the University’s Knowledge for Service mandate. Professor Asare-Bediako noted that UDS’ community-focused initiatives, such as the Third Trimester Field Practical Programme, are central to its role in national development. He expressed confidence that Professor Iddrisu would further develop community engagement, research, and graduate training.

He acknowledged UDS’ recent achievements, including its win at the 2025 International University Sports Federation World University Football Championship. He also referenced the University’s performance in the 2026 Times Higher Education rankings and student success in the National Parliament’s Commonwealth Essay Competition. Professor Asare-Bediako identified funding, digital transformation, internationalization, access, and equity as key challenges for universities. He encouraged institutions to address these areas as opportunities for innovation and national development. He affirmed VCG’s support for Professor Iddrisu in his new role.

Several Vice-Chancellors attended the ceremony, including Professor Albert Luguterah of the C. K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Professor Dennis Wolanyo Aheto of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Bernard Kumi-Boateng of the University of Mines and Technology, and Professor Emmanuel Kanchebe Derbile of the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies. The ceremony also featured a keynote address by Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister and Member of Parliament for Builsa South.
