ACCRA — Former diplomat and veteran politician Baba Jamal has returned to Parliament, securing a victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso East by-election on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The seat became vacant in January after the passing of long-serving Member of Parliament Mahama Naser Toure. Jamal’s victory allows the NDC to retain its stronghold in the constituency, an important outcome as the party prepares for the next general election.
Election Results
According to the Electoral Commission’s certified results, Baba Jamal won the polls with 10,884 votes. His closest rival, Yusif Ali Baba, secured 4,009 votes, while Mohammed Umar Sanda garnered 1,885 votes. Other contenders, Kanor David and Ibrahim Idrissu, received 104 and 43 votes, respectively.
Of the 17,048 ballots cast, 16,928 were validated, and 120 were rejected by electoral officers.
Low Voter Turnout and Election Conduct contest was closely watched by political analysts; voter turnout across the constituency was notably low. Despite the thin crowds at several polling centers, the exercise was described as peaceful and orderly. Security personnel and electoral officials remained on-site throughout the day to ensure the integrity of the process.
Baba Jamal is no stranger to the legislative house. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Akwatia and later transitioned into a high-profile diplomatic role as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria. His experience is expected to be a significant asset to the NDC minority.
Jamal is expected to be officially sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament in the coming days. He will then begin his tenure representing Ayawaso East and complete his predecessor’s legislative term.
