CHICAGO — The Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, has pledged his full support for the construction of a dialysis center in Sunyani to serve residents of the Bono and Ahafo regions. Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II made the commitment when he was delivering the keynote speech at the COBAANA Convention in Chicago, where he also held the position of co-chairman. The convention took place with the theme ‘The Health of Our People Is Our Concern: Let Us Rise and Build’.
The Sunyani Manhene praised the COBAANA executives and members for their vision and determination in raising money for the proposed health facility in Ghana and said that the initiative was an important intervention capable of improving access to life-saving treatment. He pointed out that kidney disease is still a major health problem and that dialysis is costly for many patients and their families. He stated that because there is no dialysis facility nearby, a great many patients from Bono and Ahafo have to go to Kumasi for treatment. He added that the long distance causes financial, physical and logistical difficulties, especially those patients who need the treatment several times a week. “He stated that kidney disease shows no regard for people,” explaining that it can affect kings, chiefs, presidents, young people, older adults, and both men and women.
The traditional ruler expressed his congratulations to the COBAANA members for having taken a bold step in meeting the healthcare needs of people in those two areas. Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II told the group that he would keep supporting the initiative until the proposed dialysis center becomes operational. Whether it rains or shines, I will back the building of the center to make sure it comes to fruition, he committed.
The dialysis center, once completed, should reduce the strain on kidney patients who currently have to travel from Bono and Ahafo to Kumasi and other parts of Ghana for treatment.
